City Sparrows Silhouette

City Sparrow Silhouette - Center City Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - February 22, 2008

Center City, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – February 22, 2008

Shot four years ago, today, in Center City Philadelphia.
I want to thank everyone for their wonderful feedback on yesterday’s story. I will try and give a little more background on the photographs.

There’s not much to say about this one except I was in Center City, my wife was at a doctor appointment and I decided to take a walk and shoot some pictures.
This was taken over by the freeway. I decided to make it a high contrast silhouette. It was a bird kind of day, here are other photographs taken the same day.

Feel free to leave your comment or questions, I love he feedback.

Happy Birthday, George Washington!

Pepper on Peanuts and Questioning Cop

Pepper on Peanuts and Questioning Cop - Maple Shade, New Jersey - February 17, 2010 and South Philly, Pennsylvania - February 17, 2008
Maple Shade, New Jersey – February 17, 2010 and South Philly, Pennsylvania – February 17, 2008

I was searching my archives for photographs I took on this date, February 17. I came across these taken two years apart and couldn’t decide which to showcase today. The thought occurred to me that they might look interesting as a composition. I know it’s very unusual, but I found it interesting. Sometimes you have to venture out of your comfort zone and have a little fun…

Please leave your comments and questions here.

Also, here is the story on the pepper photograph:

We were at the produce market and I spotted this pepper and decided to shoot it on the spot. Laid it on the sacks of peanuts and shot it. Added a little softening glow in Photoshop, and here it is. I thought it was fun and wanted to share it. All comments appreciated…

Hub of the City

Hub of the City - Center City Rush Hour – Philadelphia – January 29, 2008

Center City Rush Hour -Philadelphia – January 29, 2008

Well, today I thought I would post something a little different and I’ve been thinking about this image lately.

Shot on a rainy Winter day in 2008, I obviously manipulated the heck out of it. It’s a combination of HDR, motion blur and partial black & white conversion. With today’s tools, it’s easy to get carried away…

Here is the original photograph (on right)

Let me know what you think. Please comment here

VJ Day – Kissing Sculpture

San Diego, California
San Diego Embarcadero – April 15, 2009

VJ Day & 42nd Anniversary of Woodstock

On August 14, 1945, it was announced that Japan had surrendered unconditionally to the Allies, effectively ending World War II. Since then, both August 14 and August 15 have been known as “Victory over Japan Day,” or simply “V-J Day.” The term has also been used for September 2, 1945, when Japan’s formal surrender took place aboard the U.S.S. Missouri, anchored in Tokyo Bay. Coming several months after the surrender of Nazi Germany, Japan’s capitulation in the Pacific brought six years of hostilities to a final and highly anticipated close.

It is one of the famous moments in the history of photography: a sailor kissing a nurse called V-J Day in Times Square. The late Alfred Eisenstaedt, one of the 20th century’s great photojournalists, simply turned around as he was dashing down the street, looking for the right shot to capture the exuberant moment. He saw the embrace – and the picture itself is now history.

Now, meet the monstrous 25-foot, 6,000-pound sculpture by J. Seward Johnson that evokes this same kiss and carries the tacky title Unconditional Surrender. The bronze statue is near where the U.S.S. Midway Aircraft Carrier is docked.

Notice the group of people on Segways.

An aluminum copy of the sculpture is in Sarasota, Florida.
